But read my responses to the questions of other users in the <a href="http://www.teachingarts.org/asksmusic/discuss/">Recent topics</a> area.</b> I have been a music educator for almost twenty years and have seen many ideas and new instructional methods for engaging students in learning music in the secondary schools.  I have taught band, orchestra, choir and exploratory music and have explored many teaching strategies over the years.  I am now a district administrator for the visual and performing arts in a large school district.  The standards have been a major part of the work we have done in the arts.  I have seen veteran music teachers get excited about teaching once again and new music teachers feel successful because of the focus the standards brings to the program for their students.  Students are performing, composing and improvising in the music programs.  Many are performing their own compositions and gaining a sense of confidence as a musician.  The use of music standards in our program continues to provide new and exciting ways to help our students engage and find success in music.
