This project is finished. But read my responses to the questions of other users in the Recent topics area.

How do you foster in students a love of learning? How can we make them better readers? How do we bring literature to life in the classroom? How do we improve literacy, fluency, and comprehension? Incorporate theatre in your classroom!

A close look at the California Theatre Content Standards will show a strong correlation with the Language Arts Content Standards. The use of theatre skills and techniques energizes the classroom and brings literature to life. Theatre games help students work cooperatively, solve problems and think critically without realizing how hard they're working. Dramatizing vocabulary and stories builds comprehension. Self-confidence soars and otherwise quiet students light up. Everyone is simultaneously engaged. Life-long skills are being developed. Using theatre makes classroom instruction easier and livelier. Students are invigorated with a desire to read. Discipline problems decline.

I have worked in the regular classroom, as a visual and performing arts specialist, and with at-risk students. The Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards have been a driving force in my program to help me teach what's essential. Lives have been changed as students were given opportunities to perform. More meaning has been attached to learning. A foundation for understanding and appreciating the theatre has been built. These are the things they will remember about school for the rest of their lives. The use of standards has given theatre a context and a forum for self-directed and self-reflective learning. Students can connect to other content areas and to life. They can write and speak about what they see, do and experience using the vocabulary of theatre. Their discussions are rich, and their thinking skills are highlighted. Theatre standards help students know what is expected strengthen the quality of a theatre program and other content areas in the classroom.
