I’ve been developing standards based units for over two years now and I am pleased with the changes I have observed in my classroom. The main difference in my classroom is the increase in student achievement. My students are working harder than ever and learning so much more. The standards challenge my students and require them to do work beyond what I considered important in the past. As a teacher, the sequential grade level standards have helped me plan more meaningful and appropriate learning experiences for my students. I use the standards to help organize my curriculum and optimize my teaching time. Using them has also helped me to build a more balanced curriculum and opened the doors to more than just creative expression for my students. The visual arts standards are as important to the teacher as they are to the students!
