A New Opportunity for University Students of Theatre, Film, and Dance

The Department of Theatre, Film and Dance
    Humboldt State University
    Arcata, CA 95512

Humboldt State University is the most northern campus in the  California State University system and is situated on the coast in a serene and pastoral setting 270 miles north of San Francisco. The campus uses its redwood location as a natural resource to attract adventurous, self-reliant and inquisitive students who want to experience hands-on, learning and research.

The Department of Theatre, Film and Dance offers to students opportunities to enliven their imaginations, to arouse their passions, and to engage their feelings through performance and production in theatre, film or dance. Our courses and programs are designed to provide breadth of experience by developing reading, writing, collaborating, designing, directing/choreographing, and ensemble skills. Through hands-on learning we foster in students a greater understanding of themselves in relationship to the larger world picture as they explore the social, cultural and artistic milieu of the world and its peoples.

Our students participate as actors, dancers, choreographers, directors, filmmakers, designers and writers in our production program. We sponsor the International Short Film Festival, the oldest student run festival of its kind in the country. We mount never before produced new plays every three years in the New Plays Season. Last year we hosted the Earth Matters Onstage~Ecodrama Playwrights Festival that brought together students, playwrights and artists concerned with theatrical works that addressed environmental justice, our link with the natural world, our sense of responsibility to our world, and the questions we all face as cultures and communities of one world. We offer an Interdisciplinary Dance Stuidies Program that provides students the opportunity to link their enthusiasm for dance with language and culture, arts integration, or sacred tradition. Our production program is diverse and rigorous in the skills essential to the practice of theatre, film and dance.

We have developed a brand new and unique BA major that integrates the disciplines of theatre, film and dance into a series of core courses for all majors that offers cross disciplinary training and flexibility in career choices for students. This major provides interdisciplinary opportunities inherent among the three disciplines while allowing students to explore more depth by pursuing an emphasis in one of the disciplines. The goals of the integrated theatre, film and dance major are to address contemporary trends in the disciplines, and to enlarge the student’s understanding for all three disciplines to cross cultural, social and political boundaries through examination of human issues through these art forms.
