Salary for a female dancer

Question from Chantell: Is it possible to live happily off the salary of a dancer? How does the salary of a dancer provide for a family if I were to have one?

    Nicole's response: Dear Chantell,

Wow! I see from the range and number of your questions that you are indeed enthusiastic and curious about the possibility of launching your career as a dancer. I have separated the questions from each other somewhat so that it will be easier for others to access the information.

I will try to answer what I can in the space I have here, but I encourage you to search the web and/or ask dance professionals in your area for more in-depth information to some of your queries.

It is indeed possible to live happily while making your living strictly as a dancer. I have done it for years and know many people who have managed it too! This is not to say that it is easy; if you're talking exclusively about performing for a living, companies who offer full-time contracts are few and far between, and rare indeed are jobs with the sorts of benefits (health insurance, retirement funds, etc.) that those who choose other careers take for granted. But certain areas of dance (teaching in a college or university setting, for instance) may offer the stability and benefits that the rest of the field may lack.

Many dancers have also managed to start and support a family and continue their dance careers. Again, it is not necessarily easy. Speaking for myself, I found that my choices for myself changed as I grew older. When I launched my career, my goal was simply to make enough to pay my bills without having to resort to a non-dance back-up job. As I grew older and it occurred to me I was not immortal (!), I amended that to include buying individual health coverage and investing a certain amount of money annually in a retirement fund. Now that I am married and have a baby, I am looking at ways I can earn more in my field so that goals like buying a house and starting a college fund for my daughter can be met. This probably seems very far away to you, and it should when you just start out. What may look formidable in those early years becomes much more accessible as you specialize and gain expertise a few years down the road.
