Options after retirement from dance
| Question from Chantell: What are the options after retirement? |
Nicole's response:
Dear Chantell,
I take your question about 'retirement' to refer to one's options after retiring from an active performance career. First of all, I would urge you to subscribe to no one's assumptions as to when a dancer should step down from the professional stage; one only has to think of Margot Fonteyn or Martha Graham, or in our own time consider the phenomenal example of Mikhail Baryshnikov as he has re-invented himself as a performer as he ages. Secondly, of course, there are many areas of professional dance that you can continue to practice until you are 101 years old if you wish (!), such as teacher, choreographer, artistic director. (See my earlier replies for a list of dance careers and some thoughts on keeping your training and interests diversified as you train.) And lastly, for dancers such as that highly trained performer who has been touring and performing exclusively since a young age, there are several organizations and programs devoted especially to that tricky career transition away from stage performing.
