Ideal weight for female dancer
| Question from Chantell: What is the ideal weight for a dancer at age 18? |
Nicole's response:
Dear Chantell,
As
to the question about your "ideal weight," for a dancer of any age,
there is no such thing. Again, luckily for all of us, many more dance
companies are embracing a diversity that includes the natural range of
body types as well as the natural range of racial background, etc. (For
a spectacular example, look into the work of Bill T. Jones.) Rather
than being preoccupied with their weight, dancers would do well to be
preoccupied with eating healthily: three square meals a day, and plenty
of high-protein snacks tucked into that dance bag for moments in
between classes or rehearsals. Remember, if you are training seriously
as a dancer, you are making extreme demands upon it on a daily basis.
(Or: you wouldn't skimp on (premium) fuel if you were driving a
highly-tuned racecar in the Indy 500!)
