Question from Kim: How much did a dancer get paid 5 years ago? And could you live off it?

Dear Kim,

Please see my new, as-comprehensive-as-I-can-manage answer(!) to salary questions in Dancer's salary on the Recent Questions page. As you will discover, it's not as straightforward a question as you might imagine.

I can tell you that I myself have worked exclusively in the dance field for the past six years and somehow have managed to live off what I have earned, in the very expensive San Francisco Bay Area no less. (My car is fourteen years old however, if that's any indication...)
