Dance scholarships

Question from Melissa: I am a cegep (College of General and Vocational Education) student at a school in Quebec, Canada and I have been dancing since I was three years old. I am writing to you because I needed some advice about how to aquire a dance scholarship. I would love to pursue my studies in dance, although right now I am in the health science program at my school. I was just wondering if you could give me an idea on where I could go to get information about a dance scholarship. I would love to be able to finish my studies in health sciences and then go to a University with a dance program. I am not even sure, however, if i am eligibile for a scholarship in dance but i would like to see. How did you do it? and where did you start? Also, I would really love to go to school in the states....this is why I am coming to you.Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and help me find what I am looking for. Nothing will stop me from realizing my dream! Thank you again

Your dream is entirely within reach, with a little tenacity and perseverance. A GREAT place to start looking for both colleges and scholarships is at Dance Magazine. They publish a College Guide that is an incomparable resource in the field, and have recently also put out a much-needed Scholarship Guide. Go to www.dancemagazine.com

My other favorite college resource is at Dance/USA, a great resource for the dance community. They have an "Advice to Young Dancers" section that includes an excellent "Choosing a College" page. Go to: www.danceusa.org

Finally, it would be remiss of me (though not job-threatening... I think?) not to point out the other resources on this very site! If you click on the "Dance" tab above, you can find our "Career Planning" section of "Dance Features" -- and within, helpful sections on "College" and "Scholarships"!
