Nicole's response: Dear Helen,
As I have said many times elsewhere in these pages, absolutely!
My responses to these questions (click on Recent Questions to find all the dance questions asked here) will have pertinent information for you:
Beginning to dance as an adult is a great place to start for anyone who feels that they are a 'late starter' to dance, but suspects that nonetheless they have discovered their passion. It includes a link to a great article on late starters in dance.
How old where you when you knew that you wanted to be a dancer? has my personal take on starting to dance at age 18.
Job prospects for dance majors has a list of the wide range of types of careers in dance you might pursue as a serious dance student. Many of them require less technical training than others.
Things to know before becoming a dancer has a great cross-section of advice from folks in many areas of the dance world -- many of whom started 'late' as well.
And remember: you're almost fourteen, not forty! (A dance teacher once told me: "You can feel 'too old' as a dancer at ANY age; it's only later that you look back and regret wasting time feeling that way when you were so young.") At this age, my advice to you would be to have fun, explore dancing, and see where it takes you. A GCSE is a great place to do all these things, so relax and enjoy it!
Good luck,
Nicole
